Not a pretty sight!!!!!

Well, the day of chimney repair has brought us this....

Chimney front
Peel back the siding and this is what you see....

Right side of chimney
15 years worth of damage, just percolating in there!

Another view of chimney base Worse on the right due to those stairs being there.

Right side under the chimney Remember I said the right side..um..this is the base of the firebox. Basically, this thing could have just fallen at any time. Nothing was supporting it. More pics here if you wanna look. This is a virgin fireplace. We've never used and and today I am so glad we didn't, who knows what would have happened. Hubby has hated this house from the get go, but at the time, it was what we could afford and now since we want to leave this &^%%* town someday, he doesn't want to buy another one. So we are stuck repairing this old house!

Sigh...more wood had to be bought...don't want to think of the extra cost. Guess that stimulus check that I really didn't want as we're gonna get taxed on it again will come in handy.

This is so not what I needed right now!!!

Chimney fires scare the pee outta me. Good thing you didn't light up!!!

Oof. Homeownership--I can't wait!

I can't imagine living in an HOUSE that I owned that I hated. What a bummer!

Good luck on the fireplace repairs. What a bummer!

OMG! You are very lucky you didn't use the fireplace before! With the weight of wood and pressure of heat, I can only imagine what would have happened.

Look at it this way - you're not spending money. You're saving the lives of the people who will buy the house after you. Hey, you're a hero! Go reward yourself with some yarn. ;)

Oh my! I'm so glad you found that now instead of if/when you lit the chimney!

I know exactly what you are going through - believe me! Home repairs are...ugh!

UGH! That's awful; but as you said, thankfully you've never used it.

As for the stimulus check, according to the IRS website, it's not taxable:

"Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?

A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment."

Gah! That looks awful. I'm hoping it will be quickly fixed and cost less than you expect.

Thank goodness nothing really bad happened with that fireplace.

OMG, that is scary! I'm glad you found it before anything really bad happened! Hugs to you!

Yikes! That could have been a disaster. I hate home repair expenses. We're getting quotes for a new roof and it just kills me to think how much yarn I could be buying.

Oh man! That is not pretty. I'm afraid to see what's in my chimney, having just bought a house. (We also have a fireplace).

How long have you lived there?

oh man! That so sucks! Fingers crossed on it being cheaper than you thought!

OMG!! Scary!! Hopefully it won't cost as much as you think (but having just done a remodel, prepare for the worst, right?). ugh.

Oh honey, that hurts!!!! But look at the bright side (yes there always is a bright side) - nothing TERRIBLE happened, and they will fix it good as new. I know, that was a kinda lame bright side, but I'm sending big hugs and happy thoughts too!!!

Oof. Bugger that.

Sorry, chickie. Home repair is never a fun subject.

Oh man! That's terrible! I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. too bad Ikea doesn't sell chimneys.

We just replaced our siding on our house and where the chimney was - it looked just like yours! Rotten and my home is only 10 years old. I'm glad you're getting yours fixed!

Gotta love when building contractors don't think of these issues when they build.

Hope the cost of your fix isn't too terrible and that your current contractor is a good one.

Yuck...things like that make me glad that we rent. I'm glad you found it when you did and I guess things could always be worse! At least your hubby is handy, that's a plus right?!? :)

Yeah, can you believe we're all going to get taxed on that economic stimulus again? Somehow that just seems ridiculous to me.

I'm getting anxious just looking at all that repair. Eeps!

Sorry to hear about the house repair. I hope it's not too costly for you and at least now it will be fixed you guys will be safe.

You should see what my house looks like - cause we are reparing much more than just a chimney! I know what you are going through right now!

Renos suck. That is downright scary, though.

I hope that's just age; it looks awfully a lot like termite infiltration! Now that would require more special treatment!
